History of Blackjack

Blackjack - also known as 'twenty one' and 'pontoon' - is a card game that nowadays is normally found in a betting house with players trying their luck on acquiring the elusive 'twenty one'. It's commonly presumed that the game originated in France amid the 1600's. However, as with many other casino games the precise evolution of the game is still a mystery.

Chemin de fer was introduced to the US following the French Revolution, but the game did not become favored in the casinos until the house offered payouts as a bonus. This was the only method that appeared to get gamblers betting on blackjack. One variation on the bonus pay out was for a gambler to make 'twenty one' with the blackjack card (given a value of ten points) and an ace (worth eleven points). With the increasing popularity of the game the payouts were canceled but the name 'black jack' lasted.

Black jack is not just about getting an outright '21', but the primary challenge is to defeat the croupier without going 'bust'. The betting house certainly has a house edge over the chemin de fer players over the long term, but with black jack the player retains an element of choice.

Since nineteen thirty one when the U.S. initial legalized wagering, blackjack has grown into a traditional betting house card game. Furthermore, it's the joining of both skill and math used in twenty-one that has made the game hugely loved. Blackjack gives an appealing adventure to any scientist, math guy or betting player looking to analyze the scheme of the game.
