Dice and dice games go back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern day craps flourished from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one is certain of the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is considered to have been made up by the British man, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It's alleged that Sir William's soldiers enjoyed Hazard at the time of a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was developed from the fortress's name.

Early French colonists brought the dice game Hazard to Canada (the area of Acadia, which is now Nova Scotia). In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically attractive. It's believed that the Cajuns altered the name of the game to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning roll of two in the dice game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps table design. He added the Don't Pass line so individuals could bet on the shooter to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big eight, and Hardways.
