The Background of Craps

The history of Craps dates all the way back to a dice game called Hazard, which goes back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in Early 1800's. Hazard is believed to be a descendant of Azzahr, which means 'the die' a game enjoyed by Arabs.

The game developed as it spread out from the Arab territories to France and then to England. By the early eighteenth century, formal game rules for Hazard had been developed. France adopted the British variation of Hazard and is believed to have been imported to America by early French colonists. In the mid-18th century, when the English beat the French in Canada, the French settlers moved to Louisiana. Dice were played on river boats, clubs and wharfs and a simplified 'American' version of Craps was developed. The game headed west and is a favoured game that is played all over the U.S. and around the planet.

The name 'Craps' is believed to be a French enunciation of the word crabs, which means a pair of ones. There are 2 basic types of Craps that are bet on-street Craps and bank Craps. Street caps, correctly called seeing as it's wagered on the streets is where a shooter sets a point and then tries to roll that point. The wagering is made either with or against the hurler and someone must cover the wager in order for the game of craps to carry on.

In bank Craps, which is the familiar game, bet on in betting houses, the betting house funds the game. The players bet with the house-the house covers all of the bets of all of the individuals. Craps was a very well-loved game but in the past 20 years had divided itself and other games, such as poker and twenty-one became more well-loved.
